What is ‘Por Ror Bor’ Government Insurance?

If you’re renting a motorcycle in Thailand, you might hear the term Por Ror Bor (พรบ.). It’s something every rider should be aware of, whether you’re here for a short trip or planning a longer stay.

What exactly is Por Ror Bor?

Por Ror Bor is the nickname for Thailand’s compulsory motorcycle insurance. It’s required by law for all motorbikes and cars registered in the country. This insurance is issued by the government and comes with the annual registration (tax) of the vehicle.

What does it cover?

Por Ror Bor only covers medical expenses for injuries or death caused by a road accident. The coverage applies to both the rider and any passengers involved. It does not cover damage to vehicles or property, and it doesn’t always fully protect you if you injure someone else.

The standard medical coverage is usually up to 30,000 THB (USD $1000) per person, and in cases of death or permanent disability, compensation can go up to 500,000 THB. These amounts can change, so always check the latest policy details.

Is it enough?

Por Ror Bor offers very basic protection. It’s mainly there to help with immediate emergency medical costs. However, it won’t cover theft, damage to the motorbike, legal liability to others, or offer full coverage in a serious accident. That’s why many renters or vehicle owners choose to get extra voluntary insurance for better protection.

In the event of a serious motorcycle accident (such as internal injuries or head trauma) that requires surgery or long-term treatment, Por Ror Bor will not be enough. It does not cover major surgery, rehabilitation, or medical evacuation. If you’re a foreigner, it also won’t cover flying you home or private hospital care.

Por Ror Bor may also only be accepted at government hospitals, which might not offer the highest level of care or comfort. In an emergency, you could be taken to the nearest facility—not necessarily one you’d choose.

For these reasons, having travel insurance or private health insurance is strongly recommended.

Do all rental bikes have Por Ror Bor?

Yes. All registered motorcycles in Thailand must have valid Por Ror Bor insurance as part of renewing the registration. At JeJe Motorcycles, we make sure every bike is fully registered and insured with up-to-date documents.

You’re always welcome to ask to see the papers before you rent and confirm the registration date on the sticker.

A few tips for riders:

  • Always wear a helmet. It’s the law, and can prevent serious life threatening or fatal injuries
  • Keep the speed down and leave a safe following distance
  • Drive carefully and defensively
  • Do not drive while intoxicated.
  • Strongly consider extra travel or motorbike insurance to ensure you are fully covered
